1962 Relief Society Poetry Contest

Female Relief Society ~ June 1878

Meeting held 8th, 1878

Opened with singing "Oh My Father, Thou Do Dwellest".



Prayer by Sister Peel



Sister Morrison addressed the Sisters feeling so much pleased to see so many of the Sisters coming to meeting and hoped and prayed that they have come here to be benefited and having their good desire in their heart to come again and unite with the Sisters and celebrate the spirit of God.



The minutes from the former meeting were read and accepted; also the minutes of the 22nd of June.  Then Sister Morrison thought it best to put business up to the next meeting and have this meeting for a Testimony meeting; hoped  that the Sisters will be free and bear their testimony; urged the Sisters to be grateful and thankful to the Lord that He has brought us out of (?).....and home to Zion.  She only wished that we could live (?) before the Lord day after day; exhorted Sisters  to be Prayerful and try to overcome that spirit and influence  that advise try to overcome us and try to lead us astray. (???)



She talked about the great responsibility that rests upon us as mothers in Israel to raise up our children in truth and righteousness and make them useful for this reat work roll on.  She also felt much pleased to hear of the young Sisters, that she had a good meeting where everyone felt the Spirit of God richly manifested.

Sister Peel also bore her Testimony; felt so much benifited in the good meetings she attended when our visiting Sisters were here; especially spoke a good deal about the gospel instruction was given in Fairview; and said that she only wished the spirit would move upon her with that much power as he did when she heard the speaker, but  many things slipped from her mind but was sure that it had done much good.



Sister Simpson felt very glad to see so many Sisters together for a good purpose and prayed to God that all may feel to continue and bore her Testimony.



Sister Seely bore her Testimony; felt glad to meet and spoke upon our children.  If we do our duty and teach them good principles, we let the .......consequence(?) follow; if we do that in combination with prayer, their actions will not be for us to answer, it will fall to their own condemnation.



Mother Watkins bore her Testimony; felt so glad to be here, thought it was the best meeting she had attended since she came from the old country and said she would come again and wished that her name would be enrolled as a member of the Society.



Many of the Sisters spoke in their own language and a good spirit prevailed.


Meeting closed with singing and benediction.

Sister Simpson addressed the Sisters, in the absence of Pres. Sister Morrison. Asked the Lord to bless her and give her a portion of the good spirit that she may say something for their benefit; bore her testimony to the great Latter Day Saint work; felt so much blessed, instructed and benefitted of the good counsel that we had from Sister Eliza Snow and Zina Young.

March 2 th 1878

Meeting held March 2th 1878.

Opened with singing and prayer by Sister Peel.

Minutes from former meeting were read and accepted. Disbursements and donations were read; also the temple donations.

Sister Morrison then stood and read a letter that was sent to her about our share towards the book printed, "Women of Mormon Home"(?)  Sister Wells related in a kind letter to Sister Morrison that our share was acknowledged but Sister L.R. Snow thought it best to sell the first edition and bring forth the next edition then the sisters could have their share and divided in books (?). But  if they wished, the books would be handed out to them now.  It was moved and seconded that our share should remain there  until the second edition.

Sister Morrison appointed a quilting bee on March 12 for the temple. She also made some remarks about raising of silk, and said that now is the time to take those things to considerigen (consideration) and to plant out Mulberry trees in time.  She hoped that others would make an effort..... good Sister Peterson has left, and exhorted the sisters in truth and faithfulness in the gospel.  She then gave place for the sisters to bear their testimonies.

Sister Peel bore a faithful testimony and felt glad that we were prepared to fulfill the wants and needs of the poor. She also translated all that was said and written to the sisters who could not understand the English language.

Sister Simpson felt well to meet with the sisters and bore her testimony of truths.

Many sisters bore their testimony in their own language.  Sister Ingre Christensen was admitted as a  member of the Female Relief Society and the meeting was closed with singing and prayer.

Prayer by Sister Madsen

Sister Madsen addressed the Sisters and said that Sister Morrison could not attend the meeting, but hoped that the Sisters felt free and bear their testimony and the good Spirit will be with us.  The minutes from the former meeting were read and accepted, also a letter was read from E. R. Snow that Sister Morrison sent in for the Sisters to hear.  Sister E. R. Snow sent the things back that was sent from Mt. Pleasant to the Fair, and thanked the Sisters for all they have done towards it.  And also stated that she received the money as our share in the Book "Women of Mormondom", saying that the book will be printed and leave the press in a few weeks.

Sister Peterson bore her testimony also many of the other sisters in their own language.  All felt well.

And meeting was closed with singing "We Thank Thee O God for the Prophet" and Prayer by Sister Hasler.

Relief Society Meeting held June 11th 1877

Prayer by Sister Morrison

Sister Morrison addressed the sisters and said that business called her away and prevented her to attend fully to this meeting and she hoped that all the sisters  .... for a good purpose, so they will have a good time anyhow.



 After she left most all the sisters bore their testimonies in a faithful manner. Sister Josephsen spoke and felt like she would try to do good, but she can not .......she seeks to be a good Latter Day Saint and a good member of the Society, but she thought she could not come  ..... to it.



Sister Christine Jensen then testified that she visited Sister Josephsen's house almost from the beginning of the Society, and that she never left her home without a gift for the poor, and as a general thing treated the sisters with something good to eat



Sister Fechser brought in the report how she was getting along at Manti, looking for the Brethren felt well and was glad to do a little good towards the great work and was glad to have been chosen.



Sister Peterson spoke some about the silkworms and encouraged the sisters to take an interest in it and also she bore a faithful testimony to the truth; said that she was baptized in the church for 24 years and never faltered a minute, that this kingdom? was not the only truth in this world.



All felt well and a good spirit prevailed.



Meeting was closes with singing "We Thank Thee God for the the Prophet and prayer by Sister Peterson.

Female Relief Society ~ March 1877

Singing: All Praise to Our Redeemer

Sister Morrison addressed the sisters; felt well and pleased to be together with her sisters since she has been away from her home for a short time; she was called to her family unexpectedly because of a death.  She enjoyed her visit as well as circumstances allowed both improved very much her health.  She said to the sisters that in her absence, business was neglected; we would attend to that first and then we would spend the rest of the time in bearing the testimonies.

Then the disbursements were read out, and also the income from the last two months.  Sister Morrison encouraged the visiting sisters to keep a strict account of the ...... they have gathered, and also have every name on their list of the sister that have given.  She said that the 11th of May .... by and hand over. ....we used to make up our yearly report and then send to the Women's Exponent, also she would like everything .... up as she thinks it is the last report she makes out among us, then she will be called away in a short time to her family.

It was moved and seconded that Elizabeth Jensen was admitted as a Member of the Female Relief Society and also a Member of the Visiting Sisters; motion was unanimous.

Sisters were appointed to tend to Sister Anna and also to Sister (Nyberg?) in the nighttime.

After all the business was tended to many of the sisters bore their testimony in true and faithful name.  Sister frandsen remarked to the sisters the greatness and mercy of our Heavenly Father who preserved us from the hour we left our native country both on the land and the sea; has been with and  all trouble and temptation  and blessed us all with good things.  Why should we not show our good will to our fellow creature and all the good to them we can, then only by ... duty we have a right to call on our Father in Heaven to bless us when we show by our deeds, that we are His children and try to walk in His paths.

Meeting was closed with singing:  Now Let Us Rejoice In The Day of Salvation.

Female Relief Society February 5, 1877

Meeting held February 5th 1877 Opened with Singing "Sweet is Thy Word, My God, My King". Prayer by Sister Morrison The minutes from the former meetings were read and accepted. Sister  Morrison addressed the Sisters . Feeling well to have another opportunity to meet.  Also she felt not able to say much as she was sick for the last few days, but it strengthened and was much pleased to see the meeting so well attended.  She encouraged the Sisters to bear their testimony of the great and glorious work we are  engaged; to be on guard, and to do our duty day by day, ad to do all the good  we can. Sister Peel felt well to be here together with the Sisters, she hoped that the good attendance of the Sisters will continue and a good feeling and united spirit will be with them.  She felt well and had always a good desire   to do the Will of the Lord and accept his Commandment, and will always do the same.  She thought it would not hurt any of the Sisters to come to the meeting once in a month.  she would feel so much better and all would be benefited by. Sister Simpson felt much gratified to bear her testimony to the great and glorious work we are engaged in and bore a faithful testimony to the true gospel. Sister Peterson bore her testimony; felt thankful to the Lord that He gathers us from different countries and considered how pleased we "Mothers of Israel" can by to .....our Sons and Daughters in security while the nation prepares for war, and father and son have to go to their call. Sister Lofgreen related a dream she had not long ago which was interesting.  Many of the Sisters bore faithful testimony both in English and Danish. Female Relief Society, August, 1876

Meeting Held August 11th.  Opened with singing "Guide Us O Thou Great Jehova".  Prayer by Brother Page.  Singing, "O Firming Foundation".  Sister Morrison introduced Brother Page to the sisters and was glad for the opportunity of having him in our midst to speak a word of import to us. 

Brother Page rose and spoke especially of faith, showed us how to obtain faith, to get all things we need in time.  He taught us to keep the commandments of the Lord and to teach our children to do the same by prayer.  He introduced us to some of the stories of his life; how he was traveling from settlement to setttlement to bless the sick and the afflicted, what a great comfort it was to him when he could do good; how the Lord blessed him through faith in the Lord.  All his remarks were very interesting and instructive.  He also encouraged the sisters for the good of our society, and promised to come agian whenever the spirit directed him to do so. 

Sister Morrison then said that she feels the great responsibility that rests upon her to lead this society and felt built up by the good instruction of Brother Page and invited him to come again.

Sister Peel, Sister Simpson and Sister Peterson bore faithful testimony to the truth of the Gospel and all went away rejoicing after singing and prayer.

Female Relief Society May , 1876

Meeting held May 18,1876.  Opened with singing "Oh God the Spring of All my Joys".  Prayer by Sister Peel.  Singing: "Come Dearest Lord".  Sister Morrison addressed the Sisters and showed them things going to the fair in Salt Lake City for all the Sisters could see it.  It was all well received and it was moved and seconded that the flower bouquet after it was showed at the expedition should be sent to sister Eliza S. Snow to be accepted as a present from the Sisters of the Female Relief Society of Mount Pleasant which was unanimous.  Then Sister Morrison rose and felt well and thankful to meet again and brought in remembering the greatnes of the Lord, how he shows himself in everything like it was said in the scripture that when we would see all those things coming to pass, we would .....in which time over life, not only in our town all the territory; we hear with ...... , but after all ...look at all things, the Lord was merciful to us.  .. is still some left that will grow up for our good.  She said that we gain much reason for thankfullness.  Also she made remarks about the .. Lady's Society that were not attended as well as it .... she wants the sisters to remember and uses all their influence upon their children and send them to that meeting and sustain Sis Fechser that was willing to teach them, and it was just all well their duty to go to meeting as it were for the older sisters.  Sister Simpson said that she felt well and pleased for all she have seen worked up from our Sisters and felt  to sustain the ...Lady Soc.  Sister Peel felt well and thankful to meet with the sisters.  she said that ever since she joned in this church she felt to sustain everyting ....is good that she felt all the time her life with the Latter day Saints and keep the commandments of the Lord.  Sister.... felt greatly pleased she have a desire to come again and said that she like the life with this people and......Prayer by Sister Petersen.  Closed iwth singing.

Prayer by Sister Peel

Sister Morrison addressed the meeting, said she was glad to be with the sisters, said she was not well, also not felt like ...... , but she likes for the sisters to bear their testimony and rejoice to build up one another.  We should mouth our feeling and not partake of the spirit that will take power over us, that we should humble ourselves before the Lord and try to overcome that feeling; if we too take this course in practice, our children will learn a good example and will do likewise.  She said she felt well in meeting yesterday, that what was said was gone home to the hearts that we should think over this thing that we would gain ......in the eternal world.

Sister Peel felt well to come together the sisters, and said that we live in a curious time that we take of the spirit of Union.  She hoped that the sisters will be more united together by taking this course we could accomplish great things.

Sister Simpson was glad to meet once more with the sisters, felt like to rejoice in the opportunity to bear their testimony of the Kingdom of God.

Sister Peterson rose and felt well, said that we have so much reason to rejoice in the privelege to live in these dayd and build the Temple to the Lord and prepare us of the .......of the Son of God... angels in Heaven like ... she hoped that our children will see it, therefore it is our duty to teach them good principal, if not all will come up to their .... some of them will.

she made some remarks that it was our duty to help sustaind the poor.

After we sang, some of the Danish sisters spoke in their own language.  ....was sung ...in the handbook.

Female Relief Society April 17, 1876

Meeting held April 17th 1876.  Opened with singing "O Saints Have You Seen on Your Mountain Tops"

Prayer by Sister Peeel.  Minutes of a former meeting were read and accepted.  Also reports of donns and disbursements.

Sister Morrison addressed the meeting at some length and was glad to see so many present annd hopd now that the weather was fine that the sisters would make in convenient to come to meeting, that the house mibht be filled and the Spirit of the lord might fill every bosom to overflowing.  She hoped that the sisters belonging to the visiting commiettee would be particularl to keep a correct accounting of donations received by them no matter how small, so that a correct report could be made at the end of the year.. also to remember the coming emigration.  There wer some who had donated last meeting, but there were still many more that might do so, that every little would help.  That the Lord did not look at the amount given so much as the spirit in which it was given, for He loved a cheerful giver.. That now was the gathering of the dispensation that the servants of the Lord had been called to go to the nations of the earth to gather out the honest in heart and prepare for the second coming of the Mesiah.

Sister Peel spoke in the Danish language and interpreted what had been previously said so that all might be efited.  Many of the sisters bore a faithful testimony to the great work of the last days and rejoiced in the privelege affordedthem of hearing the servants of the Lord from time to time.

It was proposed and seconded that our meetings which were held semi-monthly should be continued; one a testimony meeting , the other a business meeting alternately.

Meeting closed with singing and benediction by Sister Peterson.

It was also moved and seconded that Sister Hasler should be appointed Assistant Secretary for the Relief Society which was unanimous.

Female Relief Society April 3, 1876

Meeting held April 3rd, 1876.  Opened with singingMy God the Spring of all my joys.  Prayer by Sister Peel.  Minutes of former meeting were read and acceppted.  Also reports of donations and disbursements.



Sister Morrison talked of the imigration and of the responsibility that rested upon us as Saints of the most High.  That we had come up to Zion, received our wishings and ... and new of the blessings accrueing from observance of the ordinances.  That it was our duty to use every lawful effort in our power to assist in the gathering of the honest in heart, that they too, might have an opportunity of coming up to Zion to learn the law of the Lord and assist in building up his kingdom that His will might be done on earth as it was done in heaven.

Fifteen of the sisters present donated liberally towards the emigration and a general good feeling was present.



Sister Peel bore her testimony.  Sister Simpson said she was desirous to live her religion and walk in humility and do unto others as she would be done unto.. hoped to live to do the will of the Lord and keep His commandments.



Sister c. Peterson said she felt well in the church and kingdom of God, and was desirousto do all the good she could and share her faith by her works.  Many of the sisters bore their testimony in the Danish language.



There was a great deal said about the dirty meeting house and two of the sisters were appointed as  a d....tion.  Sister Peel and Simpson to call upon Bishop  to see what arrangemments could be entered into that it might be regularly cleaned and attended to, knowing that the state in which it was now kept was a disgrace to Mt. Pleasant. 



It was proposed and seconded that Sister Stena Nelson be admitted as a member of our Sociiety.  Vote was unanimous.



Meeting closed with singing "From all That Dwells Beneath the Skies.

Female Relief Society March 6, 1876

Meeting held March 6th 1876.  Opened with singing  "O Saints Have You Seen On Your Mountain Tops".  Prayer by Sister Hemmit (Hemmert). Minutes of former meeting read and accepted, also reports of donations and disbursements.



Sister Morrison was pleased to meet with the Sisters and glad to see so many present, and that all wanted to unite together and take a lively interest in doing good in every possible way.



Also that the mothers would encourage their daughters to attend their meetings with punctuality that the older sisters might feel encouraged in striving to do them good.



Also that the sisters in going round would remember the emigration (fund) as it was the wish of Sister Young that te people should try and make an effort to helpout the poor and the honest in heart, that they might have a chance to show what they coul endure for the Gospel's sake. 



Sister Simpson was glad to meet with the sisters and be able to talk of the blessings we receive day to day; we had also great reason for  thankfullnes that the servants of the Lord had been sent the everlasting gospel and bring us to the Kingdom, and rejoice in the blessings of the Last Days; prayed that te  Lord would help us to be faithful, that by putting all ou mites together it would soon help to bring out the "honest in heart"; that this was th gathering dispensation and i was our duty to help gather them home before the Lrd begins to pour out his vials of wrath upon the nations of the earth.

Sister Christensen felt well and hoped that the Lord would give her strength to go around and do all the good she could; she felt to sustain Sister Morrison and her couselors and all that were placed in authority and prayed that the blessings of the Lord would be upon uis Eteranally.



Sister Hemmert bore her testimon and felt well and liked to come to Sister Meeting and was dsirous to do all the good she could.



Sister Rasmussen also felt well.  She had been round visiting and said that the people generally felt well. 



Sister Peterson said it was now stormy and bad walking and now was the time to test our faith.  She was glad to be here and to e able to do a little every day; that if we do the will of our Fathr as far as we are able, it will amount to a good deal that the Lord had made manifest His will to us and it was our duty to work therin, if our hearts were right before Him, he would enable us to overcome every difficulty.



Sister Sorensen spoke in Danish.  Sister Johansen also felt well.  Sister Josephson bore her testimony, prayed that the ord would bless us all in asmuch as we wanted to serve in humilty.  Sister Lovegreen felt glad to be present and thought the sisters would all enjoy a better spirit by attending the meetings.  She hoped the Lord would bless her husband and her children inasmuch as they tried to do His will and keep His commandments. 



Sister Frandsen said she felt it her duty to mingle her testimony with the rest of her sisters.  She had been round visiting and was well received and the people all felt well and was willing to assist in helping the poor.  She said if we could but keep the good spirit, even if we had trials to contend with, the Lord would help and bless us, for He had said He would have a "tried people", and we have no right to expect to be without trials.



Sister Rosenlund felt well and hoped that the people would donate freely to help the poor from the old cuntry.  Sister Fitcher (Fescher) was glad to be presen.  She rejoiced in the knowledge she had of the Gospel and thanked God for the blessings which were daily bestowed upon us.  Sister Nabilla (?) bore her testimony in the Danish language and Sister Jensen hoped the Lord would give her the strength to overcome the weakness of her nature; that we might try to do to others as we would like to be done unto.  She knew this was the kindness of God, or she would not have been here; prayed that the Lord would help brother Brigham and give him power over his enemies.



Meeting closed with singing "All Praise to Our Redeeming Lord".  Benediction by Sister Simpson

Female Relief Society November, 1874

Meeting held in Social Hall November 8th, 1874.  Opened with Singing and prayer by Sister Peel.  Minutes of former meeting were read and approved of.  Sister Morrison expressed herself with pleasure at having the opportunity afforded us of assembling together to bear our testimonies and to talk of the principles of the gospel, revealed in the last days.  Also, she talked a little on the "United Order" and said that the Lord will have a tried people.  If we would remember our prayers in private and public, He would give us his spirit to enlighten our minds and give us wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, if we were faithful to the whisperings of the Good Spirit.
Sister Peel also spoke in her own language.  Many of the sisters bore a faithful testimony. Sister Peterson read a singular dream she had which certainly was very instructive.
It was porposed, seconded that Sister Synegore (Syndergaard), Johnson, Mina Madsen, Charlotte Jensen were admitted as teachers of the Visiting Committee.  Meeting closed with prayer by Sister Peterson.

Female Relief Society - July 1874

Meeting held in Social Hall July 6th, 1874.  Opened by singing and prayer by Sister Madsen.

Minutes of a former meeting were read and accepted.  Sister Madsen exhorted the sisters to speak their feelings freely as our Presidentess is not able to attend owing to Business.  Sister Jensen made some remarks in Danish touching on the disobedience of the people.  Said it will be like the persecution in Nauvoo the way they indulge in tea and coffee and God will scourge us if we don't repent and do better.  Sister Peterson felt glad she is one with the rest; hope to continue faithful .  God will help them that will do right.  When we have a little trouble it will draw us nearer to God.  Sister Borg and Tidwell visited the folks in the 1st ward, nearly all felt well.  Most all of the Danish sisters spoke in their own language.  Sister E. Seely bore her testimony to the truth of the work.  She was engaged in hope to go on to the end, always feels glad to visit the saints.  Said she believes this U. O. (United Order) is just as right as baptism for the remission of sins.  Sister Peel said if this Order is the thing that will seperate the bark from the wood, its alright. Lets be kind to one another, keep good company, do right as far as in power.  Sister Simpson made some scattering and edifying remarks and hop to be faithful to the end.

FEMALE RELIEF SOCIETY - - - May 11th, 1874

May 11th, 1874


Opened by singing and prayer by Sister Peel.  Minutes of a former meeting were read and accepted.  Sister  Morrison made a few remarks concerning the "United Order".  She said its like a new revelation to us in a way; hoped that we may be all prepared  for everything that will come along and also mentioned about this day being the 5th anniversary of the F.R. Society.



Sisters Monroe and Bransted both felt well; Sister Christina Jensen feels to do all the good she can to sustain this work.  She feels satisfied that something must come to wake us up and be one for Jesus said if we are not one, we ar none of his.  Several of the sisters spoke in Danish.  A good spririt prevailed.  Sister Seely and Sister Peterson visited the 4th Ward and gave good reports. . . hope to continue faithful so as to be worthy of the blessings from the faithful.  sister Peterson and Christison bore their testimony and felt well and feel something must come to unite us.  Sister Morrison remarked that the Gospel is good news to them that receive it. Let us remember that our desire was to be saved in the Kingdom of our God.  Everything that has been revealed is for our good.  For instance, now . Celestial Marriage, baptism for the dead, our journey across the plains that has been a trial for some.  This "United Order" is one more thing to purify us; let us trust in God and do the right.



A vote was taken that all present would fast and pray on the first Thursday in the next month that Sister Olsen's little girl should be restored to her health again.  Sister  Peel explained in the Danish language what had been said and made a few remarks.  Sister Winkler and Harsley  felt well, hope to remain to the end.  Sister Harsley hoped that more united will soon bind us more together.  She said let us encourage the Sunday School. . .  that will be one step towards it.   Sister A. Johnsen gave good reports of the 3rd Ward.
